ALL ABOUT THEM!
character name: Captain Jack Harkness
canon: Yes
canon point: Season 2 before COE
important history: The man now known as Captain Jack Harkness was born on the Boeshane Penisula in the 51st century of the planet Earth. From what is known of that time he had a relatively normal childhood with two well functioning parents and a younger Brother [known only as Gray]. When he was still a boy his home was attacked by as yet unnamed alien beings. During the attack his bother was taken and his father, Franklin, was killed leaving young Jack with his mother. He spent many years searching for his brother, but never found him.
Some years later, Jack joined up with the Time Agency becoming a Time Agent. While in the employ of the Time Agency Jack’s activities are mostly unknown, however, we do know that at the end of his stint Jack was a part of or stumbled onto something that the Agency wanted hidden and they removed two years worth of memory from his brain. Shortly thereafter Jack became a conman, using his Time Agent training to survive as best he could. During one planned con he crashed an alien ambulance in the middle of War torn London during the Blitz. It was there that Jack first met the Doctor and Rose Tyler. After helping to stop the events that he himself has inadvertently set into motion, The Doctor took him onboard the TARDIS as a traveling companion. Together He, The Doctor and Rose Tyler had many adventures and became very close.
Then came Satellite 5 and the Daleks. Jack led a small group of humans in a vain attempt against the Dalek forces and was killed. Jack Harkness was dead. At least that’s what he’d thought. Unbeknownst to Jack, Rose had looked into the heart of the TARDIS, gathering into herself the powers of time and space, wiped the Daleks from existence and brought him back to life. When he woke, he found only dust where there had once been Daleks. He ran for the TARDIS only to find that he had been left behind.
Jack was able to make his escape from Satellite 5 using his Vortex Manipulator, a standard issue for all Time Agents, and found himself in 1869. With his Vortex Manipulator no longer working, Jack was forced to remain in the time line and wait and hope for The Doctor to turn up.
Somewhere between 1869 and 1901 Jack discovered his inability to stay dead and it was this discovery, and his talk of The Doctor, that lead to his capture by Torchwood. During his capture Jack was convinced to join up with Torchwood as a freelance agent working with them over the decades until he was finally assigned to Torchwood Four. In 1999 Jack assumed command of Torchwood Three after returning to the Hub from a mission and finding the entire team dead at the hands of their Leader Alex Hopkins, who then killed himself.
After severing ties with Torchwood One in London Jack recruits, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Suzie Costello, Ianto Jones and eventually, after the death of Suzie, Gwen Cooper and embarks on his task to make Torchwood something good for all man-kind.
character age: Unknown, thought to be a least a few hundred years or more - Appearance of being in his 30s
face claim: John Barrowman
notable weaknesses: Ianto Jones, The Doctor, Wrecklessness, Secrets, Fear of Getting Close to Anyone
notable strengths/abilities: Immortality, Determination, Leadership, # Future Knowledge, Ability to make and carry out tough decisions, Tech knowledge
general personality: Jack has a strong, type A personality. He is witty, intelligent, flirty, and generally good natured. He can sometimes behave rather cockily. Although he gives off the air of being perfectly open he is, in fact, very guarded and hides himself behind the wall of his self assuredness and light hearted banter. Jack is touchy about his past and very rarely shares or answers questions about it.
He is a soul weary man and there are times when the loneliness of immortality ways heavily on his shoulders and he can feel it weighing him down. His inability to stay dead sometimes makes him feel less human and he needs his teammates to remind him of the fact that he is human, no matter how many times his reset button is hit. As a leader he is often faced with the task of making the difficult and unpopular choice even at the risk of alienating himself.
Although the lines can sometime become blurred, Jack does have a strong moral code that he tries very hard to live up to. His biggest weaknesses are without a doubt the people he cares about, The Doctor and Ianto Jones being foremost on that list. He would give his life many times over to save the people close to him, as well as the world at large and has, in point of fact, done just that.

sample rp post AS YOUR CHARACTER:
Jack watched with a vague apprehension as the heavy steel door rolled away from the main entrance and the strangely comforting sound of the entry alarm rang out in the room beyond. He'd just left The Doctor and Martha practically at the doorstep, they'd said there goodbyes, he was sure they'd be fine while left to there own devices, assuming that The Doctor didn't manage to find trouble between there and the 10 meters back to the TARDIS.
No, The Doctor wasn't what was weighting on his mind. That spot belonged to his team. The team he'd left behind without so much as a 'see ya wouldn't want to be ya'. He had no idea how long he'd been gone, according to there time line but he had the odd feeling that it had been a while. The air around the bay had felt different than when he left, it had probably been months. Ianto hadn't been at the counter in the visitor's center when he wandered in, like a lost tourist, and Jack wondered if they might be out on a mission somewhere.
What had happened to them in the time he'd been gone. Were they alright? Had they managed without him? Were they pissed off that he'd gone? Glad to be rid of him? Would they except him back? The system had excepted his codes and allowed him in, did that mean anything at all or had they just been too busy to follow procedure and remove him?
There was only one way he was going to find out the answers to all these questions. He took a deep breath, shoved his hands a little bit farther into his pockets and stepped over the lip of the door frame.
"Honey I'm Home!" he called out, his shielding grin plastered on his lips.
"...Jack?"
Jack was sure he felt his heart skip a beat at the sight of Ianto Jones standing before him, in all his suited and polished glory. It immediately took his mind back to that godforsaken year when the only thing that kept him sane were his thoughts of this very moment, this very man and yet, here he stood unable to move as his brain struggled to come up with the appropriate responses. He willed his mind to kick into gear before Ianto aged and died standing there waiting for him to do something.
"You were expecting somebody else?" he quipped, throwing a look over his shoulder before taking a few long strides toward Ianto.
He stopped just an arms length away from the other man, an actual shy smile pulling at his cheeks.
"Miss me?"
"Of course, sir. Welcome back."
Jack visibly flinched when Ianto spoke. He use to call him Jack, when they were alone, sometimes even when they weren't, but he'd call him 'Sir', not even 'Captain'. Jack didn't want to admit just how much that hurt. Stung right to the heart of him and left a pin prick of a hole for him to bleed out from. He searched Ianto's face, his steel blue eyes locking for a moment on the other man's and trying not to sob at the ice he found staring back. He opened his mouth, there was so much he wanted to tell him, that he NEEDED to tell him... but not here, not now. It was too soon, too fresh. For both of them. Right now it was best to play is safe, stay neutral.
"Where are the others?" he asked looking over the teaboy's shoulder, "You didn't let this place fall apart without me did you Ianto? Gwen hasn't killed Owen or lock him in the vaults?"
"I really wouldn't know, sir. I'm sure someone will come looking for coffee soon enough though." Ianto said as he turned and began to walk away.
Jack frowned as Ianto showed him his back. Didn't the man know how horrible that felt? Didn't he know how very much he'd missed him? Didn't he want to know where Jack had been? Did he even care? Jack felt a sudden surge of anger rise in the back of his throat and fought it down. Ianto had every right to be upset with him, he reminded himself, they all did, but especially Ianto.
They'd been on the verge of something before he'd up and left without a word. He didn't dare to venture a guess at what that something was but, it WAS something, and then he'd gone off, run away with another man. How must that have made Ianto feel. Jack sighed heavily and made to follow.
"Ianto, I..." his words were cut off as the rift monitor squealed it's announcement of unpredicted activity.
Jack's head jerked toward the terminal.
"Oh come ON! I just got back!"
