general personality: The most important thing to note about Rodney McKay, and certainly the first thing he'd want you to note, is his intelligence. He is a no-holds-barred super-genius, the smartest person on the Atlantis expedition, possibly even the smartest person (or human being, anyway) in two galaxies. The second thing to note about Rodney, which will pretty much jump up and bite you the minute you meet him, is the ego he has developed because of this intelligence; he is superior, arrogant, condescending, will yell at you without hesitation if he deems you stupid and is of the devout belief that modesty is for people who aren't anywhere near as smart as he is. Combine this with a tendency to voice his honest opinions without any kind of brain-to-mouth filter and it's small wonder why Rodney isn't most people's favourite guy. Most of his subordinates on Atlantis fear his wrath and resent him, and you can't really blame them, right?

Despite his tendency toward hypochondria, paranoia, general fear and extremely vocal complaining about same, Rodney often has to face impossible situations where death is seemingly inevitable, and this is where he shows his true mettle. According to him, he does his best work under threat of death, but it's more than that -- as the smartest person on Atlantis, Rodney has had to come to terms with the fact that, more often than not, the lives of the 200+ people he lives and works with every day are in his hands, that he is the only one who can save them. As much as he seems to value himself above just about everyone, when it really counts Rodney wouldn't hesitate to give his life for Atlantis (he's done so before, albeit in a parallel universe), and most of all he would give his life for his teammates.

John, Teyla and Ronon have become something of a surrogate family to Rodney, who is lightyears away from his sister and his cat and has never really been one for making friends in any case. They're the first people he's known who've stuck around long enough to look past his abrasive personality and actually consider him a comrade and a close friend, and, well. Proud he may be, but not so proud that he can't admit that this is a good thing, something he doesn't want to lose.

So, is Rodney McKay rude, egotistical, stuck-up and overall a terribly, terribly grating person? Yes, yes he is. But he's also witty, compassionate, unerringly loyal and capable of incredible bravery. It just ... takes a little longer to see all that other stuff, okay.
