ALL ABOUT THEM!
character name: J'onn J'onzz (Martian name), John Jones (human alias)
canon: Smallville
canon point: Definitely after season 9, since he has his powers back. I'll say it's the presumed future a bit after season 10, with Superman and the Justice League being out-and-out heroes.
important history:
- Was a celebrated Manhunter on Mars - law enforcer, judge, and army officer all in one
- Watched his wife, child, and his entire race get killed by an alien invasion
- Singlehandedly killed almost the entire alien race in retaliation
- Buried every member of his race and left for Earth in the 1950s
- Subsequently left Earth after experiencing racism and became an intergalactic law enforcer and bounty hunter on Krypton
- Was off-planet during Krypton's final days, but promised Jor-El to take care of his child, who would become Clark Kent
- Spent the next twenty-five years on Earth, taking on different identities to remain close to Clark
- Saved Clark's life when he was 19, revealing himself as a fellow alien
- Became a trusted ally of Clark Kent, Oliver Queen, and an eventual member of the Justice League
- Temporarily lost his powers to give Clark's powers back to him, after which he became a detective in Metropolis
- Had his powers returned to him by Doctor Fate and subsequently used them to save the Justice League and Justice Society
- Infiltrated Checkmate and removed all of their knowledge on the Justice League and its allies
- As a shapeshifter, took on a new appearance shortly before the trip to Erimos
character age: 1,372
face claim: Michael Shannon
notable weaknesses:
notable strengths/abilities:
general personality: When J'onn enters a room, conversations halt. All eyes come to rest on him, and all of the room's occupants wait for him to speak. He could be in a bathrobe with bare feet and a bag of Oreos, but he will still project that powerful aura of experience and wisdom that has aided the Justice League in its growth.
J'onn has a very magnetic personality. People are naturally drawn to him, and they hang on every word he says. This ability could be used and abused to his leisure, but alas, J'onn has never really done so, or perhaps because he himself is unaware of just how charismatic he truly is. It's rather ironic, considering how humanity has treated him, which still remains to an extent today.
J'onn likes to project a somewhat tough front. This front allows him to exist as a leader and a martyr. But underneath this front, he is still the rookie Manhunter who sought the best for people. In fact, it is not uncommon to find him studying mankind further through literature and technology. He even enjoys video games, and he's not above "schooling" the other members of the League.
The most important trait that J'onn possesses is his ability to keep people together. He's usually the backbone of any given team, the unspoken pool of water that keeps them afloat - a fact that others sometimes take for granted. He has a notoriously dry sense of humor, though he has been known to use his shapeshifting ability for comedic effect on rare occasions.
Don't let his empathy fool you, though. There is a reason why J'onn was considered to be the best bounty hunter in the 28 known galaxies, and it wasn't because of his powers. The Manhunter can quickly go from the wise, soft-spoken sage of the Justice League and turn into a brutal, efficient, and almost uncaring force of nature - "The Emerald Tempest," as the Dominators refer to him, and as Zor-El, Zod, and Kara Zor-El can all attest to. As J'onn himself had stated, there's a reason why he's the last surviving Martian, and it isn't due to luck or coincidence. His compassion and understanding of humanity bellies the fact that, when pushed, he can become one of the most frightening beings in the universe.
Originally, J'onn had a distaste for humanity, based on his experiences upon originally coming to Earth. After watching Kal-El grow up and witnessing both Clark's and the Justice League's selfless actions, he has come to believe that mankind's greatest strength is its potential for hope and peace, not its penchant for chaos and destruction. However, unlike most other heroes, J'onn is not above killing, due to being a law enforcer first and a superhero second. He generally will try to avoid killing, though he will resort to it if he must.
Overall, the Last Son of Mars is a man who realizes how serious the situation of the world is. But it is this realization that allows him to also take it lightly when it's suitable, when him and the team can simply kick back and relax.
anything else important about your character: A black man became a white man because...well, he's a shapeshifter. And I think Michael Shannon is a be-rilliant actor and a great choice for Martian Manhunter.

sample rp post AS YOUR CHARACTER: Just as soon as it had began, the pressure upon his mental shields had disappeared. Something wasn't adding up. At least for now, he needed to remain withdrawn and watch his words and actions. She was still foreign to him, and the slightest slip-up could cost him his very will.
"There's no such thing as a perfect race, nor a perfect empire. My people's greatest enemy was, in fact, themselves. The White Martians and Green Martians were practically identical, save for their mental states and default appearances. Centuries of injustice, miscommunication, and mistreatment from both sides came to a head, and it resulted in the eradication of all. On Krypton, people were divided into so-called royal 'houses', and due to a fanatical religious prophecy, the planet was destroyed. Of course, if the Council had simply heeded the impending warnings, the Kryptonian race would have survived, but they were too arrogant, too boastful to believe that they could be felled. And your empire...I've encountered my share of Almerac people in my day, men and women alike. Your race is grossly imbalanced, with one individual placed high above another. But the human race?" He motioned with his arm down over the street. On the ground, a black man, a white woman, and an Asian male were laughing and walking down the street in joy. There was no emphasis placed on their appearance, or social standings.
"Humans are getting over identifications of difference. For years, men and women have been treated with perfect equality, with no person held above another. People of all races, genders, religions, sexual orientations...all of them are seen as equals. One of, if not the most important nation on this planet has just elected its first colored president. Metahumans are becoming more accepted by the day, and even extraterrestrials like us are, too."
John continued to stare out over the street, with one foot brought up on the ledge of the rooftop, allowing him to rest his arms on his knee. "And what of other species in this galaxy, Queen? The ones that you think so highly of? My race was destroyed over simple miscommunication and blind mistrust. Krypton was eradicated due to a group of individuals believing in some so-called 'prophecy', and because those they faced were too arrogant to care. And Almerac? On Almerac, men are treated as slaves, and women reign supreme. A far cry from equality and open-mindedness."
Finally, the Martian turned to look at Maxima, staring her straight in the eye. "Don't be so quick to judge a species due to their own technological and outward social statuses, especially when humanity has shown itself to be far more unique and infinitely more interesting than any other race I've encountered."
